Providing high quality health care is a key objective of governments around the world, including Australia. However, budgets are limited and so health care providers need to do more with less.
One key aspect of that is the optimal allocation of resources across a hospital to better serve patients, in particular the booking of outpatients into operating theatres – operating theatre scheduling.
Recent developments have made this theoretical possibility a reality. We are now able to answer the question:
What are the optimal allocation of patients to operation plans and theatres to ensure maximum throughput and maximum productivity of facilities and staff?
We found Biarri a pleasure to work with. They were engaged, helpful and responsive in understanding the … needs of our department. The entire process from development to operation was collaborative and professional.
The Automated Theatre Booking Tool takes data from a number of common data sources that a hospital can access locally or from other easily accessible data sources (e.g. historical operation times).
These data sources are combined via a pipeline developed specific to the hospital using a number of Biarri’s data processing tools.
This prepared data is then input into the Automated Theatre Booking Tool which can then be run overnight to produce new daily operating theatre lists.
These lists are then examined by the booking clerks and entered into the booking system. Suggested surgical slots which are not chosen are then recreated the next time the engine is run.
The tool is able to provide outputs in a variety of formats such as Excel, CSV, TSV, etc. as well as via APIs allowing easy integration into existing tools.
Outputs can also be both created automatically (e.g. for the start of the booking shift) or on demand when required to test different scenarios to model future changes
