Eliminating fatigue risk across
50+ mining sites
Field Mining Services (FMS), a leading maintenance contractor in Australia’s mining and resources sector, manages more than 600 workers over 50 client sites. With fatigue recognised as a critical hazard in mining, FMS required a smarter, more robust way to embed compliance and worker wellbeing into its rostering process.
Business Need
As a major maintenance contractor servicing mining and resource operations across Australia, FMS operates in one of the most safety-critical environments in the country. Fatigue is a well-recognised potential hazard within the mining industry. Each mine site applies its own working hours protocols and fatigue management guidelines. For FMS, this meant ensuring compliance with more than 50 different fatigue standards while managing 600+ workers across multiple sites.
This was previously managed through spreadsheets and was complex, resource-intensive and carried risk. Leadership determined that relying on manual oversight for such a critical safety control was no longer acceptable.
FMS required:
- A customised solution capable of handling multi-site complexity
- Embedded compliance within rostering activities
- Real-time monitoring of fatigue risk
- Confidence to demonstrate compliance to clients
- A scalable system to support future growth
Our Approach
Biarri partnered closely with FMS over a 12 month implementation period to customise Biarri Workforce into a fatigue-aware rostering solution tailored to their operational environment.
Key elements included:
1. Fatigue Rule Configuration
More than 50 fatigue and working hours protocols were embedded into the platform, aligned to site specific requirements, enterprise agreements and legislative standards.
2. Real-Time Breach Detection
The system flags potential fatigue breaches in real time, both retrospectively and forward-looking across extended date ranges, even when employees are rostered across multiple sites.
3. Workforce Visibility
Live dashboards provide visibility into employee availability, accumulated hours and workload balance, enabling proactive adjustments.
4. Data Integration & Reporting
Roster data is exported into Azure Data Lake to generate fatigue monitoring reports and support audit verification processes.
5. Division-by-Division Rollout
The platform was implemented incrementally, ensuring each division’s operational nuances and client rules were accurately reflected.
Rather than simply scheduling shifts, the solution embeds fatigue compliance directly into roster design acting as a robust administrative control and indirectly eliminating the risk of unknowingly breaching fatigue standards.
The Results
FMS operates with full confidence that fatigue risks are actively managed within the rostering process itself. Our client has now:
- Eliminated manual fatigue oversight risk
- Enabled systematic compliance across 50+ protocols
- Provided real-time fatigue monitoring across all divisions
- Strengthened client confidence in contractor compliance
- Improved roster transparency and audit readiness
- Created a scalable foundation for future workforce growth
